SYPE Regina June 21st Lunch: Mayor Pat Fiacco
SYPE is pleased to present guest speaker Mayor Pat Fiacco!
Pat Fiacco is Regina’s 33rd mayor, elected to his fourth term on October 28, 2009 with 85 per cent of the vote. The Mayor was the creator of the I Love Regina campaign which is not just a slogan but a symbol of the pride Reginans share in their community and a desire for their city to be the best it can be.
During his time as Mayor, Pat Fiacco has been tough on crime seeing it drop to levels not witnessed since the early 90s. He’s put more officers on the streets and reduced auto thefts by nearly 60 per cent.
In the Mayor’s first three terms and with the help of his council colleagues residents have had the lowest average municipal property tax increases in western Canada. In addition, they’ve held the line on taxes four times.
The community’s first Regina Downtown Neighbourhood Plan is now in place. Its goal is to direct future development and planning in the downtown in way that will create a vibrant, pedestrian-first community that thrives 24/7.
Through the Mayor’s vision and leadership, Regina has enjoyed several years of economic growth that have put Regina on or near the top in Canada year after year.
The Mayor has also led the charge for additional housing of all types in Regina. The corporation now has a comprehensive Housing Incentives Policy as a catalyst to development.
Growing up in the inner city, Mayor Fiacco understands the struggles residents in the area face. That is why he created the Regina Inner City Community Partnership – a grassroots, community initiative that supports the work of agencies in the areas of crime and safety, housing, and employment.
Mayor Fiacco relishes the fact municipal officials are the closest to the people and celebrates it by opening the doors to City Hall with initiatives such as the “Mayor for a Day”, Open Door Visits and the Speak Out Line. He also enjoys speaking with residents in their own community with the Mayor’s Mobile Office.
With a busy work day, Mayor Fiacco cherishes the time he has with his wife Angie, their kids Melissa, Jordan and Mathew and granddaughter Leena. A former Canadian Boxing Champion, Mayor Fiacco is an internationally accredited Olympic referee and judge for boxing and is the first Canadian appointed to the International Boxing Associations Refereeing and Judging Commission. He’s an avid runner and triathlete having completed the Canadian Ironman and several marathons.
